Is samadhi possible while living in the world?

Dhananjay • 10/12/2012
Question

If the aim of all Yoga is to experience Samadhi, is it possible to experience samadhi while living in the world and getting distracted continuously with things like job, family  responsibilities, etc. Is it not like swimming against the tide and also dangerous for health to be pulled in two different directions.
Also is it possible to experience samdhi while living in the world...If not why to aim for the impossible and get dejected?

Answer

1. The aim of Yoga is ‘Kaivalya’ (self-realization). Samadhi is one of the means to achieve this objective.

2. It is possible to reach Samadhi while living in the world. It becomes possible when one realizes the falsity of his individual Ego & remains detached to the offerings of the world further to attaining ‘Gnyana’ (knowledge of truth) that this world is illusory. To reach such a state one should lead a life true to ‘Dharma’ (efforts towards the attainment of self-realization being one’s true Dharma)

3. Even if one were to decide to swim WITH the tide and lead a life of senses as per his whims and fancies, he will still have to swim back all the way to where he started from and then again swim AGAINST the so called tide till he reaches enlightenment. This is the law of the Almighty. Which is easier?

ॐ तत् सत्
(That Supreme being is the absolute truth)
