Doubts regarding pranayama & asanas

Dhananjay • 5/31/2012
Question

Dear Dhananjay,

Thank you very much for such a kind service of yours.I've been practicing the asanas & paranayamas for about a week.I had some questions regarding this-

1.When I practiced halasana,I had a little pain from lower neck towards middle back.what should i do?any alternative to this asana?

2.Can I do Surya namaskaars instead of asanas?

3.What is the concept behind swallowing two times in pranayama?I have difficulty doing it.Can I do without it?

Thank you

Answer

1. Asana-s are to be performed slowly and smoothly, gradually exerting more and more to achieve perfection in the final pose. Experiencing pain is common during the initial stages and eventually goes away with regular practice.

2. Surya Namaskara is also a kind of Asana which has its benefits. However, it cannot substitute all Asana-s. Hence other Asana-s are also necessary.

3. Swallowing helps close the larynx and thereby lock breath within the lungs. Gradually develop the ability to do so before Kumbhaka.
