Effect of music on mind and Brahmacharya
Question
As attachment to any type of sensual pleasure does not lead to God, and listening to music is a form of sensual pleasure, clearly relying on it as a form of pleasure will not lead to self realization. But, if you had any insight, I'd be interested to hear your view on how music one has preference for affects their journey to self realization and attachment to the physical world. Does it have any semblance to 'mantra' or 'sounds of God' as when you listen to pleasurable music you are engaging deeply in listening to the sounds, and if so is it conducive to practice and finding God? I personally have always had a preference for upbeat, excited music and it does not seem to have any obvious negative drawbacks unless I were to listen to it at high volumes and for extended periods of time. Of course, music that excites lust would be negative.
I've thoroughly enjoyed reading your responses and have gained great benefit and insight from your deep explanations and comments. Thank you for your contributions to humanity.
Answer
In the context of Brahmacharya, that music, which helps develop 'Bhakti' (devotion) towards the Supreme, eventually merging the mind there is beneficial. Other forms that merely give a temporary high through the senses and the mind are not of benefit.
Devotional songs extolling the greatness of the Almighty, or the journey towards the self are the best.
ॐ तत् सत्
(That Supreme being is the absolute truth)
