Question

QUESTION: I have never read the vedas but from various articles on the internet I got the following info:
~Vedas speak of an everlasting, all seeing, all hearing God to whom is our eventual return.
~Vedas include various rituals like havana and information on many gods like surya devata, etc.

My questions:-
i) I find the above two statements contradicting. Why worship others after we know of Brahman(not brahma)?

ii) From where did the trinity come & are they completely false or just 'non profit employees created by Brahman'?

iii) Other religions like Islam also preach about worship of the One True God.Are Allah/Brahman/Paramatma/Parameshwar all the same Formless(nirguna) God?

iv) Jesus of Nazareth was an enlightened prophet of Brahman(not brahma) who loved Brahman/God so much that he called Him his Father. Is not that true?

ANSWER: 1. The infinite, all pervading Brahman who is formless, nameless and unperceivable by the 5 senses and the mind cannot be comprehended by the common man. Only an advanced Yogi who dives deep into Samadhi gets access to such perception. What then should the common man do? How does he get access to connecting with the Supreme? His ability being limited to sense perception, what is his hope?

To address this problem, the Hindu religion has given names and concepts to the various, apparent manifestations of the one Supreme who exists in all animate and inanimate objects and even beyond. By giving form and shape to such a manifestation of the Supreme, the concpt becomes tangible to the commoner. It becomes comprehensible to his sense limitation.

The great Almighty for example shines a minute part of his immense power through the Sun which results in life on Earth. Without the Sun, life here would perish in no time. So this aspect of the Supreme which helps maintain life is given a name as ‘Surya Devata’ (Sun God). By referring to this immense source of life energy as a God and by worshipping this God, the worshipper unknowingly aligns his mind and perspective towards that Supreme Lord who gives the Sun his power. He unknowingly connects himself to the Supreme force which shines through each and every being including himself. Such an alignment gradually helps him overcome the false concept of his individual ‘I-ness’ or Ego and develop the real concept namely universality. This is the general principle behind the concept of Gods and worshp.

2. This entire creation is the Lord’s Leela (divine play). He alone is real while all else is a part of his illusion. It is said in the scriptures – “Tad Ekam Sat, Vipraha Bahudha vadanti” (He alone is real, he alone is the truth, the sages call him by various names). Before creation, one force alone existed, it alone exists and it alone shall exist after dissolution. Inbetween, just as the reflection of the Sun appears in various pots of water and makes it appear as though there are may Suns in these different pots (while there is only one Sun), the power of the Parabrahman shines through various beings, be they animals, humans or Gods and makes it appear as though there are that many creatures and entities (while there is only one Lord who shines through all of them as the Atman – which they themselves do not know). The concept of the trinity is no different from this but with a very high manifestation of the Lord’s power.

3. Yes

4. It does not matter what name one calls him with. Just as calling water with different names does not change the property of water, HE remains the one and only Supreme, immaterial of what one calls him as or doesn’t.

QUESTION: I read somewhere that God can be worshipped & perceived in 3 ways as follows:-

i) Nirgun-Niraakar or the attributeless & formless God: Worshipping God through devotion or bhakti is not tangible in this case because God is devoid of any gunas(attributes, positive or negative). The only way possible here is Knowledge & Meditation because this God is Impersonal.
QUESTION#1 Is this not true??

ii) Sagun-Saakar or the God with attributes & form:
Worshipping God through devotion & good actions seems appropriate as God is Personal.I have no questions in this case.

iii) Sagun-Niraakar or the formless God with attributes:
My biggest doubts lie here.

QUESTION#2 In this case, can we worship through all the ways, namely, devotion, good actions, knowledge and meditation because this God is Personal too??

QUESTION#3 Is Allah not Sagun Niraakar according to Quran??

QUESTION#4 This approach seems less difficult than worshipping the formless & attributeless God.Is that not true??

Thanks for answering my previous questions.

Answer

1. Bhakti (devotion) is the both the personal & universal medium of communicating with God. It does not matter whether the worship is with form or formless.

2. The Nirguna Brahman (formless Lord) has no attributes. A Yogi who worships this formless Supreme can still have love, devotion and a personal contact with this formless Supreme if such is his perspective.

3. Not being well versed with the contents of the Quran, it may not be apt to answer this query.

4. Different approaches appeal to different people. That which is easy to one might not be so to another. One should choose that approach which appeals the most and stick to it with perseverance. When the intentions are genuine and the efforts sincere, all roads lead to God.
