Abstinence & Behavioral Changes

Dhananjay • 8/18/2012
Question

Respected Dhananjay,

As per your guidance through various of your previous posts and answers to my queries I have been trying very hard to follow abstinence yet I observed few behavioral changes and finally slipped to relieve extreme sexual anxiety.

1.In the first fifteen days the sexual urge which developed was controllable and I could contain it, then after a week, the urge resurfaced and there was a sort of anxiety and restlessness which developed in my behaviour. I tried chanting God's names yet after few hours the sexual urge re-emerged with a greater intensity. I continued to subdue it and noticed an increase in frustration and aggressive behavioral aspect in me, leading to short-temper, ego, attention-span deficit etc. Finally while I was sleeping at night, I was woken up by the same urge and after a total of 22-23 days I slipped into self-inflicted sexual relief. It did cause an extreme calming effect, but it turned the guilt pangs on. Is it so tough to control or I am feeding acceptance to a weak mind and will power?

2. It's so tough Dhananjay, also I subconsciously started viewing few women who had shown interest towards me with lust. I viewed them in that manner for few seconds without deliberate conscious in the weeks of control of urge and then quickly changed my vision.  Yet that fraction of a second of deviation had caused all the harm to the overall mindframe, it was like the pictures got etched in mind and only after relieving myself of the pent-up sexual urge I could erase those pictures.

Kindly suggest suitably the cause and the action steps.

Thanks and Regards

Answer

Past Samskara-s (impressions) & Vasana-s (tendencies) that densely envelop the Atman cause consciousness to associate itself with the body-mind complex resulting in strong sexual tendencies. The way to overcome the same is through a life of Yoga with Brahmacharya and meditation. Practices such as Pranayama attenuate such karma slowly and make Brahmacharya longer.

Indulge in Yogic practice twice a day as explained earlier with 4.00 A.M wake up and much meditation. Such sincere practice will gradually dissolve unwanted tendencies and make Brahmacharya unbroken. Then, you will slowly start to realize the bliss of the Atman
