Chanting OM

Dhananjay • 11/12/2016
Question

Dear Mr. Dhananjay,

Thank you for all your help in the spiritual path.

As householder, can we chant OM? I happened to read in the following link that it is harmful to chant OM. Could you please clarify?

https://magnuseduce.wordpress.com/2012/08/05/maharishi-mahesh-yogi-on-the-mantra-om/

By God's wish, I do not have an ishta deva. But I want to chant a mantra when the mind is restless.

Please help.

Regards,
Gary

Answer

Can one's self be harmful to oneself? The truth pervades all beings and that alone is real. Rest are all moving images on the eternal truth and not of substance. Who is a Sanyasi? Who is the householder? One who is in the quest to realize the truth is the Sanysasi. It does not matter whether he is married or single or a hermit, as long as he is in the quest of the self. The 'ॐ' (OM) represents the truth, which is one and within all. How can harm can come to anyone who chants and merges into the truth?

That which comes or goes in not real. So social statuses such as being a bachelor, householder, widower or something else have nothing to do with one's core, which is the Atman. Knowing it to be such, one should let go all attachments to gaining or losing and hold on to the self. Then, he goes into silence, which is the nature of the self.

Merge the mind into the formless Lord, with whom one's Atman (self) is integral and indivisible and chant the Omkar.

God bless

ॐ तत् सत्
(That Supreme being is the absolute truth)
