Music and Brahmacharya

Dhananjay • 6/20/2012
Question

Thank you for your humble grace.  My query rests upon the matter of music.  Obviously music is a sense based pleasure which is outside of us and ultimately Maya.  However we are vibratory by nature.  Can music be used as a tool or medium to reach altered states and be used for healing?

Answer

While positive, soothing music which calms the mind and inspires spiritual feelings of awe and love for the Almighty has its benefits, one has to ultimately succeed in cleansing the mire around the Atman, if  higher states of consciousness are to be reached and permanently resided in. A life of Yoga & Brahmacharya as has been described is the best method to succeed in the same. Vibration applies only to Prakrti (the manifest form of creation), while the true us namely the Atman is completely still and in indescribable bliss. Appropriate external music (which inspires divine feelings only) and the internal Nada (inner sound that springs from the Almighty) can be taken recourse to occasionally if one likes.
