Question

QUESTION: hello dhnanjay,
I have been trying to achieve brahmacharya from three
months when i first came to know it from a elder student at my
college.i m 17 years old boy. i have been trying it but at best i could maintain it
for only 1 to 1.5 weeks, which i have achieved for 4 to 5 times after which
i usually make mistake.i have begun eating sattwic food and started waking up at 4.40 am
since last 7 days and do  mula and uddiyan bandha , sarvangasana and meditation for
upto 45 min before which i run in the morning for about 10 mins. i am in 12th
and as you are a fellow indian you know the importance of 12th class and
the entrances which follow it so i have to attend classes in the evening
from 3.30 so i meditate at 3.00 pm before going to the classes
and can't do evening meditation at 6 or 7 pm .
I have a few queries.

1)After a few days of brahmacharya i get a very strong attack of
lust due to which i have lost after reaching a week of brahmacharya.
so i would like to know how to win over this strong bout of lust.
i really want to become a brahmachari and feel deep remorse the moment
attack is over, only to succumb to it after some days again.i have recently 2 days back
suffered from a loss.

2) i have realised the importance of sattwic food and the trouble which rajasic and
tamsic food causes, but when i say no to such food articals like onion my parents
get very forceful. i will be going for holidays for 3 days so my question is what should
i eat when i m not at home but at some hotel. please suggest some food which i can eat
there which will keep my mind calm and not induce turbullence in my mind.

3)As i said my parents got angry when i was saying that oninon, garlic and fish are
bad for health.they said that onion was anti inflamatory and fish contained omega
nutrients.when i told them that i need to stop eating these as these induce thoughts
they told me its normal to have such thoughts and there was no need to do food and
mind  control at the age of 17.they said that such things should be done after one has
grown old.they say that we should enjoy when we have the time as even if you do all
this and your life ends in some mishap then all this will go waste
in my attempt to try and convince them i gave them the book called
'youth and vitality' written by Swami Purshottamanda from Ramkrishna math. you
might have also faced such problems at home.

4) i have read your past answers and got very inspired from them.i have one doubt on
one concept.you had said that atma which is god itself reflects in a young maiden
then why is that it is called lust and termed as bondage when we get attracted to it.
also if god is present in everything then why is that lust exsists in this world ,and why
some people  try to hurt others when god is present in them.this question was hurting me
recently.

sorry to ask so many questions but they are really troubling me .your answers have been
very helpful to people , please help me too and if you think there are some of your
past answers where you have covered these topics then please name the title of those
answers and also tell which past answers are very important for me to read. i have very
limited time on the computer.
may you be successful in your attempts

thank you
a very struggling student aspiring brahmachara

ANSWER: 1. Conscious and relentless efforts at a life of Yoga & Brahmacharya are the only ways to get established. As and when strong sexual Samskara-s (impressions) from past births get weakened from such practice, Brahmacharya becomes longer.

2. To the extent possible, one should avoid strong, Rajasic & Tamasic foods. Sometimes it might not be possible to get the required type of foods when outside home. At such times there may not be much of an option. Fruits and coconut water can be added to the diet in a larger volume at such times so as to reduce the volume of cooked outdoor food.

3. The power of the Atman or the Lord shines in the form of ‘Maya ‘(cosmic illusion) in a young beautiful woman so as to attract a mate to form a family. This is the source of the beauty (not the body which is a medium). This effect of Maya makes one mistake the body itself to be beautiful (which is an incorrect assumption and ends in bondage & sorrow as the body is impermanent). Hence a person involved in lust and passion is under the effect of Maya that has convinced him of the false perception that the body itself is the source of ultimate pleasure. Since this perception is erroneous, it pushes the Jiva further into the realm of Avidya (ignorance). It becomes bound by more such karma and cannot attain liberation. Eventually, such a sense bound Jiva slips into deep sorrow. Hence one should stay clear of the effects of Maya (even though the Lord himself is the master of Maya).

Why are difficult questions given to a student in an exam? Why do the very teachers who taught him trouble him with confusing choices through objective questions in the paper? Why does a teacher who tells the student –“Study well and succeed” fail the same student when he does not give satisfactory answers in his answer sheet? Are these actions not contrary? In reply it can be said that all these actions are definitely contrary. However, if such actions are not taken, and all students are promoted without testing their knowledge, these very same students would never take the effort to indulge in indepth study of the subject to gain knowledge. Lack of knowledge would then make them unfit to tackle future challenges and requirements. It would be an all too easy task to graduate and yet not have the least knowledge of the subject in terms of reality. This is why a student has to appear and pass his tests and exams, for they are the means to certify his knowledge.

Maya (cosmic illusion) is exactly similar. It is the means of testing the Jiva which is appearing for the exam that confers Kaivalya (self-realization). Maya acts as the means of testing the aspirant who is striving to revert to the default state of purity and divinity of the Atman. Had there been no Maya, there would have been no means to certify the level of purity that an evolving Jiva has attained. The Leela (divine play) of the Lord enacted through Samsara (dualistic world) would loose meaning. Hence the Lord has made Maya into a very strong barrier. It is not easy to win over Maya. Only honest efforts with complete surrender and devotion to the Lord make it possible after self-realization. Only when man completely realizes the falsity of his I-ness (Ego) through liberation does he win over Maya. Duality itself means the presence of equal and opposite forces. Hence good and bad co-exist in Samsara. This is the purpose behind Maya which tends man into ignorance and sin. A man under the grip of Maya forgets his divinity (of the Atman) and assumes the ignorance stemming from his ego. This makes him commit wrong deeds, despite the Atman within always being pure.

QUESTION: thank you a lot for answering in such a nice
detail and with examples
i will give complete efforts from my side from now onwards
i forgot to add in a small doubt
there are many nutrient additives like complain in milk
which are dietary supplement.i would like to know whether it is
good to eat them at the initial stages of brahmacharya and if yes then
for how long and whether if they have any undesirable effect to brahmacharya
thank you
may god help you succeed

Answer

Avoid commercially available dietary supplements.  All these contain chemical/synthetic additives which toxify the body and reduce the power of digestive assimilation. To the best extent possible, home made, natural food should always be preferred. Opt for a Ragi/wheat malt mixed with milk. Drink this twice a day. The process of making such a malted milk beverage has been explained in past answers.
